The health of Grand Valley Health Plan members is a number one priority. While GVHP practitioners treat most medical conditions, at times the member and health center practitioner may determine that the services of a specialist are required. If necessary, a health center practitioner will make a referral to the appropriate specialist. Specialists, or "referral physicians," are participating Grand Valley Health Plan panel members. If a condition requires a specialist not available through the Grand Valley Health Plan panel, a referral may be made to a non-participating physician.

A health center Specialty Care Coordinator will schedule the referral appointment. The referral physician will be instructed as to where to call for authorization of additional services, if necessary. Follow-up appointments should not be scheduled without health center authorization. Charges for any unauthorized specialty physician appointments are the responsibility of the member. Member office visit co-payments, if applicable, must be made at the time of the specialist visit.

As a note, a specialist or Grand Valley Health Plan practitioner may advise a service that is not a covered benefit. While the service or product may be medically necessary, if it is not a covered benefit, Grand Valley Health Plan will not cover the cost.

The following list includes specialists that have proven, high quality outcomes in patient care and have been credentialed by Grand Valley Health Plan as a Preferred Specialist. However, Grand Valley Health Plan also makes referrals to specialists that are not included on this listing.
